Spring is a time of renewal.
The snow melts away, the grass and flowers start growing thanks to the sunlight and rain, the birds return and start chirping, and peoples’ moods lift at the more hospitable weather.
Renewal also means spring cleaning.
You know: getting rid of old stuff you don’t need or want.
Vacuuming and dusting your home.
Power washing the garage floors and driveway.
Organizing and tidying your shelves, cabinets, drawers, and so on.
Not everyone spring cleans or goes beyond a quick once-over of their home with a vacuum and paper towel, though.
But I think that people should get deep into spring cleaning.
It offers plenty of benefits beyond the obvious (having a cleaner home).
1. Declutter = Destress
You may have the most neatly organized home you know of, but it can slowly move from tidy to unruly over several months.
Maybe you’re too tired to find a proper place for new items (or to return other items to their rightful place), so they end up on your study desk or kitchen counter.
Perhaps you have some slight hoarding tendencies, finding it tough to throw things away or sell them when you no longer need them.
Regardless, your house can slowly become messy — and studies have shown clutter can stress you out.
After all, our brains like order. They like to neatly categorize things. When your house is messy, it adds that stress and anxiety.
Stress and anxiety lead to plenty of downsides, like worse sleep, less focus at work, and even physical health effects.
… Which, of course, makes it harder to earn money regardless of the work you do.
If you’re a trader, you know the importance of avoiding emotions in trading. Added stress makes it easier for you to make irrational, emotion-driven decisions that could cost your trading account dearly.
On the other hand, being relaxed and calm helps you stay cold and calculated as you place and exit trades. You’ll stick to your strategy and avoid making irrational moves.
So there’s one reason to declutter your house: it’ll help you relax, especially important in these tumultuous times.
2. Productivity Gains
On a similar note to the first point, clutter makes it harder to focus and get work done.
For one, being stressed will simply reduce your productivity. Your mind will be on other things, and you’ll get distracted by all the stuff cluttering your house.
However, there are also simply more physical objects to deal with. When your home or even just your desk is unorganized and cluttered, it’s easy to lose things — and takes time to find them.
Remember: time is valuable. Minutes spent searching for things add up to hours wasted, and hours wasted are dollars burnt.
By spring cleaning, you clear out that stress and make it easier to find the things you need. That means more time to be productive (and heck, more time for yourself, too).
3. You Realize How Much Stuff You Don’t Need
When you’re spring cleaning, a realization might slap you in the face — you have a ton of stuff just gathering dust in your house.
Sure, maybe you used some of your findings in the past. But I know that plenty of people spend a lot of money on products that they barely (if ever) use. They relegate them to some box in the basement, never to be seen again.
Regardless, you could have more material stuff than you need, and you might only realize this when you’re digging through every nook and cranny of your home.
Going forward, you can make better decisions about whether or not you really need to buy something — or if it’s just a fleeting desire. This will save you plenty more money useful for, well, making more money.
4. Sell Old Stuff, Make a Couple Bucks
Finally, and maybe not so “weird,” selling your old stuff when you’re spring cleaning can net you a few extra bucks. That’s money you can use for whatever — although I’d advise you put it to work and earn more money off it.
