Habit #7: Have an attitude of gratitude!
Live. Laugh. Love.
If those three words make you roll your eyes, that’s understandable. It sounds hokey and corny.
But whoever came up with that simple philosophy is on to something and has inspired millions of people to practice an attitude of gratitude
In fact, it’s necessary for winning traders to have a positive attitude – even through the blood, sweat, and tears.
Gratitude is one mental habit you must master.
Why It’s Important
If all you want to do is focus on how terrible your life is and be cynical, that’s all you will see.
You will miss the opportunities right in front of you because you’ll be too focused on things going the wrong way.
As a trader, that means you’ll earn less money than you should because you’ll miss out on profit opportunities due to your negative outlook.
Plus, practicing gratitude can have enormous health benefits.
Constant negativity can take a toll on your body in the form of chronic stress – leaving you with:
- Upset hormone balance in your body
- Depleted brain chemicals such as serotonin
- Damaged immune system
Basically, a constant negative attitude and cynical disposition will not only kill your profits – it can kill you, too.
If you want a better life, you have to do something about it.
How to Practice Gratitude
You must ask yourself what obstacles you face in life that prevent you from practicing the attitude of gratitude.
Is it the constant stress of your current job?
Is it the constant barrage of terrible news from the media?
Is it the constant stress of living paycheck to paycheck?
Whatever it is, you must look inward and gather the strength to address whatever affects your outlook in life.
You don’t have to be a naturally cheerful person. But practicing gratitude takes effort.
You can keep a jar, and write notes for three things you are grateful for and anything good that happened to you each day. You can modify if you can’t do this every day.
You can also meditate and reflect to keep yourself centered.
If you struggle with fostering gratitude, look for external things that can help. Maybe you can call that cheery, positive friend of yours.
Talking to your friends and loved ones always puts you in a better mood.
You can also volunteer or do something thoughtful for others to foster appreciation and gratitude.
In any case, do what you can to focus on the positive and look for the good in the world and others.
But What if Gratitude is Not Your Style
You don’t have to be Barney the dinosaur or some happy hippie 24/7.
You are a human being and life gets tough sometimes. You will naturally have bad days, mood swings, and veer to the dark side.
Just don’t get stuck there.
