Last week I phoned a buddy mid-afternoon to see what the rest of his day looked like.
His schedule was clear and so was mine, so off to the driving range we went with a few cigars and a cooler full of beers.
We hit a few buckets of balls, most of which were embarrassing since it was our first time out for the season swinging the clubs.
But nevertheless, the fresh air and catching up was all we needed to enjoy ourselves.
We talked about golf, family, sports, business and life.
When you have like minded friends who can relate to your struggles and successes, it’s easy to enjoy their presence.
It doesn’t matter if it’s your oldest friend or someone you’ve just met. You will learn something from everyone you encounter in your lifetime.
The key to growth, no matter where you are in your life, is being open to learning.
Others will always have something to teach you, but you must be open to listening and learning. It’s too often our ego gets in the way of appreciating another’s knowledge.
Knowledge is often derived from experience. We all come from different walks of life, that’s what makes each and every one of us unique.
Most often believe their way of life is the only way life should be lived. Folks like that who exhibit such closed minded thoughts struggle to flourish in life.
They’re so set in their ways that they refuse to allow themselves to learn a new skill, and venture out of their comfort zone.
We all like to live within the barrier of comfort, but growth does NOT occur there. Remaining complacent is nice, but it doesn’t allow you to be more and to have more.
And when I say more, it’s not more stuff. It’s more experiences, more knowledge, more fulfillment. Those are the invaluable things in this lifetime that are truly meaningful.
Most look to materialistic things to say they’ve lived a good life. Few are fulfilled by the most meaningful things. I encourage you to rebalance your thoughts – you’ll thank yourself!
