Many of you were unaware that 2 years ago I fell into complete renal failure. Just days before I was supposed to board a plane to attend a friend’s wedding, I was knocking on death’s door.
My wife insisted I go to the doctor, otherwise she wasn’t going to join me at the wedding. So being the good husband I am, I listened and went to my primary.
The following morning he phoned both my wife and I with urgency. We needed to go to the hospital right away.
My condition, unknown to us, was life threatening.
So off the hospital I went where it was confirmed that my organs were in fact shutting down. Needless to say, things got very real very quickly!
Of course I had canceled our trip and followed the doctors orders so survival remained a possibility. Subsequently I spent the next two years attached to a machine 9 hours a day.
There wasn’t much choice in the matter. It was do this, or die.
But this had changed everything. I come from a long line of revered men who earned a living with their bare hands.
My father’s father was an upholstery and furniture builder. My mother’s father was an auto body repairman who also ran a towing business. And my father was a master auto technician.
Naturally I had followed in the path of my prior generations. I went into the family business. I fixed cars, I towed cars, I detailed cars, I bought and sold cars, I plowed snow . . . you name it, I did it with my bare hands to earn a living.
About 10 years ago, when my mother passed at a young age due to cancer, I decided to break the mold. I was going to take on Wall Street and earn a living with my brain.
I was determined to do this. I needed to do this. I wanted my own identity, so I set out to do just that. Was it easy? Hell no! Was it worth it? Hell yes!
And it’s a blessing that I committed to doing this. Obviously 10 years ago I had no idea that I’d fall into renal failure at a young age and lose the ability to provide for myself.
But I do believe in a higher power, and I do believe that God has a plan for each and every one of us. It’s our faith that allows us to fulfill the path he’s laid out before us.
At the height of my career, the prime of my lifetime – EVERYTHING CHANGED!
All the time and effort I had put into learning how to trade that was building my pile of wealth had just become a very necessary income replacement.
I had lost my ability to earn a living with my bare hands. Trading was what was left for me and thank God I had a back-up plan when everything went from going great to not going at all.
I tell folks all the time: trading, investing and entrepreneurship is a journey and a lifelong skill set that can and will serve you until your expiration has been reached.
My lucrative “bare-handed” business had just taken a turn from creating massive income to just barely paying the bills.
Trading replaced that lost income tenfold. My financial goals had not suffered from my health situation drastically changing.
I quickly understood how most folks literally go broke when illness hits. But I wasn’t going to allow that to be my story. I worked too hard for too long to allow that to happen.
So when people tell me they don’t have the time or interest in building an additional stream of income, you now know why I look at them like they’re literally out of their minds.
In life you can make results or excuses… not both. Choices need to be made so you can live to fight another day. Do they require sacrifice? They sure do!
Not only did I financially thrive throughout this illness, I did so just the same through Covid when the world was shut down. How? I made the right choices!
I just arrived home from the hospital, all cut up and in A LOT of discomfort. The first thing I did the following morning rather than feel sorry for myself, was open up my platform and earn myself a day’s pay!
